ENGLEWOOD–The Warren Loranger Branch of the South County Family YMCA, located in Englewood, is set to open with renovated facilities on Monday morning.

‘We’ve been in the planning phase for several months now,’ said Mike Schyck, wellness director at the Englewood facility. ‘We kind of pulled the trigger on getting everything started about a month ago, moving stuff and ordering stuff.’

New equipment arrived in multiple shipments over the weekend as employees moved existing equipment and replaced flooring and fixtures in preparation.

‘It’s the first time we’re recarpeting this whole thing since it opened,’ Schyck said. ‘We’re moving everything so that can happen.’

There are about 25 new pieces of exercise machines.

‘A portion of the new machines are new treadmills and they have in them, built-in TVs that come with hookups for iPods and iPhones so you can stream your own music while you’re working out and on the equipment,’ said Mischa Kirby, director of marketing of the South County Family YMCA. One of the new machines is called NuStep, a recumbent seated stair-stepper.

‘It is really good for people who have bad knees, bad hips or lower back issues,’ Kirby said. ‘You can slide in and get seated on those.’

Another new featured machine is the stepmill.

‘It’s kind of like stairs on a treadmill,’ Kirby said. ‘So it’s a taller piece of equipment and you choose a preset program and the stairs rotate. You are kind of climbing up in the air.’

The facility will also be receiving a new set of free weights with rubber coating so noise will be reduced.

‘It’s a little bit safer,’ Kirby said. ‘They are new pieces that I think our members will enjoy.’

The cost of the equipment is valued to be about $100,000.

‘We’ve painted and added new mirrors,’ Shyck said. ‘We’ve upgraded a lot of new stuff in the facility to make it look like it’s new. It’s like doing a spit shine on everything. Everyone from locals to northerners will be surprised when they see this. It will be new to them.’
