SUN PHOTO BY TOM CHANG Workers from Frederick Derr & Company of Sarasota are working to construct a new sidewalk on Cape Haze Drive, which will run from Arlington Road to Placida Road. Construction began Sunday.

PLACIDA — Construction began on the south Cape Haze Drive sidewalk from Arlington Road to Placida Road on Sunday.

“It’s a brand new sidewalk,” said Dan Quick, community development director for Charlotte County. “We’re pouring concrete sidewalk from Arlington Road to Placida Road.”

Frederick Derr & Co., based in Sarasota, is handling the construction.

“It was a year to 18 months in the planning,” Quick said. “A one-cent sales tax is funding this project.”

The sidewalk will run about 950 by 6 feet. The budget was $14,500 for design and $75,743 for construction expenses.

“We’re doing the sidewalk for residents who requested access across the Amberjack/Cape Haze bridge to the shopping center,” Quick said.

“When they built the bridge, they had this sidewalk in mind,” said John Elias, project manager in Charlotte County.

Traffic was redirected to one lane across the Amberjack/Cape Haze bridge Tuesday.

The construction is scheduled to be completed by June.

Elias said the next sidewalk project will involve Rotonda Boulevard North, East and West to Parade Circle.

According to Brian Barnes, projects engineer for Charlotte County, development is under way for a 10-foot-wide multiuse path for sidewalks and bicyclists from Rotonda to Cape Haze.
