Church awards seven with scholarships

ENGLEWOOD — Maggie Bassetti, a student at University of Florida, is one of seven students who is going to receive a little more help from back home.

Bassetti is being awarded scholarship money courtesy of St. David’s Episcopal Church, which she and her family have been attending for 20 years. A scholarship brunch is scheduled for the winners at 10:45 a.m. on May 19 at the church following the worship service. Scholarships were awarded to three church attendees and four Lemon Bay High School students.

“She’s a real hard worker,” said Kevin Bassetti, her father and Englewood resident. “She played volleyball in high school and she’s very goal-oriented.”    Maggie studies Japanese and forensic anthropology at UF and will be traveling to Osaka, Japan in August.

“She’ll probably work for the government for a year then get a master’s/Ph.D in forensics,” Bassetti said.

Maggie will be awarded $1,500 along with Josiah Park and Angelica Connor.    The Parks have attended the church for 30 years.

“We’re very proud of Josiah,” said Jodi Park, his mother. “My son was an acolyte when he was little and he grew up in the church. He’s a very dedicated kid.”

Josiah finished his first year making the dean’s list at the University of South Florida in Tampa as a business and marketing major, according to Park.

“He looks up to his big sister,” Park said. “She works in Orlando as middle management at a five-star hotel.”

The four LBHS students — Hannah Dabbert, Madison Gatton, Tim Halloway and Seth Joiner will be awarded $1,000 each.

“We reviewed the applications with Mary Jo Holleran (from LBHS),” said Bill Bahn, a member of the scholarship committee at the church. “We look at financial situations of the student in addition to the academic performances.”

Bahn said the prerequisite for any scholarship recipient for the students is they must be full-time and be registered to an accredited school, including vocational.

“It’s automatic for students who go to St. David’s,” Bahn said. “They get awarded the scholarship for four years.”

St. David’s is located at 401 S. Broadway in Englewood. For more information, call 941-473-7807.
