ENGLEWOOD — Marc Marois will take anything you don’t need and will make sure someone else puts it to good use.

Marois is president of Giving Hope Thrift Store, an Englewood nonprofit that opened in March.

“We help people who are in transit from the streets to a house or something like that,” he said. “I’ll give them furniture and different belongings. I sell TVs for $5 (at the store) and if someone (in transition) moves into a place, I give it to them. We don’t make anything. It’s just something we do to help out people.”

Marois, a Venice resident, said he picked west Englewood because of the convenience of its location — where it can help Englewood, Venice and North Port residents.

“We’ll take anything,” he said. “Some places don’t take stuff that’s slightly used, but we take it in. We do lower and higher end. We’ll have half-bottles of shampoo come in, conditioners, fingernail clippers, manual can openers, rain gear, camping gear … it all goes here.”

Whatever money is made goes to help pay for usage of the facility. Marois said he wants to have at least two more stores and a shower facility for the homeless.

Marois has two paid staff members and five “major” volunteers.

The majority of items the store receives in donations are clothes and “knickknacks.” In addition to helping the homeless, the store also received donations that went to help seniors.

“We get some furniture in,” he said. “We have antiques in here some people have donated.”

Marois said while the current location is a dedicated store, he is looking for volunteers to help apply for grants and provide financial advising for clientele.

“We’re getting known in the community with the Realtors here,” he said. “We’re getting the word out.”

Marois said the store is working with Venice churches including St. Marks Episcopal Church, Church of the Angels and Trinity Presbyterian Church.    Giving Hope Thrift Store is located at 1851 Englewood Road.
