ENGLEWOOD — A twovehicle accident at the intersection of State Road 776 and Gulfstream Boulevard Friday morning resulted in the hospitalization of two locals.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, around 11:19 a.m., Judith A. Bruck, 66, of Englewood, was headed north driving a 2006 Jeep Commander in the left turn lane of Gulfstream Boulevard approaching S.R. 776.
At the same time, a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup driven by 60-year-old Dennis B. Phillips of Englewood was traveling in the eastbound lane of S.R. 776, approaching the Gulfstream Boulevard intersection.
According to the report, Bruck stopped at the stop sign and did not see Phillips coming toward her, and then turned onto S.R. 776 in front of Phillips. Phillips tried to stop to avoid a collision, but Bruck’s vehicle struck the left front part of the truck.
When Charlotte County Fire/EMS arrived at the scene, both drivers appeared to have sustained traumatic injuries and a call was put out for two airlift helicopters, according to Fire/EMS spokeswoman Dee Hawkins-Garland.
When the first chopper arrived, Phillips was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, but, according to the FHP report, he sustained only minor injuries.
Bruck, whose injuries were listed as serious in the report, was taken by ambulance to Lee Memorial.
Hawkins-Garland said the helicopters were coming from two different locations and, when the determination was made Bruck could be driven to the hospital in about the same amount of time as waiting for the helicopter, the decision was made to take her by ambulance.
Both drivers reportedly were wearing their seat belts.
Bruck was cited for violation of right of way from a stop sign, the FHP report stated.
