Extra Point Podcast: Free Agency, Spring Training, and USF Bulls

Tom Chang and Greg Lindberg discuss two big Bucs free agent targets, two things to look for in Rays Spring Training and USF Bulls basketball with PA announcer Nate Kurant.

SuhThe two big names the Bucs are interested in are defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh who wasn’t tagged by the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (as a trade option). Would they fit in the locker room? Do they have enough cap space to pull the trigger?

We ask what challenges face the Tampa Bay Rays, who have a bunch of new faces including new skipper Kevin Cash. How will the team solve the recurring problem of clutch hitting and how the pitching rotation will take shape with Alex Cobb as the ace?

Courtney Williams, Moriah JeffersonKurant, public address announcer for USF Sports, talks about the success of USF Women’s Basketball, the struggles of the men’s team, contrasting other sports, and his job as an announcer.

The USF Women’s Basketball Team has been pretty impressive this year..what is the biggest key to their success?

“They’re very versatile. Their best player is Courtney Williams. She’s a guard. She’s fantastic. If she doesn’t get 20 points in a game, it’s almost unheard of. They have another player, Alisia Jenkins, who’s a double-double machine. I think she has close to 30 this year. She’s unbelievable. From top to bottom, they’re strong and very competitive team. They’re pretty entertaining basketball. A lot of people don’t seem to believe, but when they finally go to a game, they say, ‘Hey, this is a good time.'”

What would you say you enjoy most about being a PA announcer?

I think one of the most fun aspects of it is that I essentially get season tickets to all the games. Of course, that’s the dream of any sports fan. I get to attend all the games and get pretty good seats actually, depending on the sport. It’s fantastic.
